Individual Counselling

What is individual counselling?

Individual counselling/therapy is when the client works one-on-one with a trained healthcare practitioner to address current life challenges and/or improve their overall sense of wellbeing.

At HUM, we begin all of our services with a comprehensive assessment to identify the client’s needs.  The assessment helps determine the specific needs of the individual and tailor their treatment plan accordingly.   After the assessment is completed, we use a psychotherapeutic approach for counselling.  Psychotherapy is a general term referring to therapeutic interaction or treatment between a trained professional and a client, patient, family, couple, or group.  The problems addressed vary in nature and degree. We use our assessment process to determine the specific needs of the individual and tailor their treatment plan accordingly.

Psychotherapy aims to increase the individual’s sense of his/her own well-being.  At HUM, we use a range of techniques based on experiential relationship building, dialogue, communication and behavior change that are designed to improve the mental health of a client or patient and improve relationships with others.

Psychotherapy services at HUM are provided by our integrated health team that includes registered psychologists, registered social workers and physicians. Our psychotherapeutic approach draws from a variety of models and incorporates aspects of Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Rational Emotive Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, and Family System’s Therapy.

What are the benefits of individual counselling?

There are many benefits of individual counselling. One such benefit includes addressing aspects of your life that you feel are limiting you from reaching your full potential. Many people find long-term value in individual counselling through attaining personal growth, enhancing communication skills and increasing capabilities in many key life areas, such as problem solving skills. Additional benefits of individual counselling include receiving support when dealing with depression, grief and loss, anxiety, stress, fears, phobias, self-esteem, addiction, chronic pain, trauma or abuse.

The first step on your journey to wellbeing involves your healthcare practitioners getting an understanding of who you are and the situation(s) you are facing, as well as your hopes and goals for treatment. The HUM team works with you to construct a personalized treatment plan based on this information. This plan will be followed as you are supported and guided to overcome the issues you are faced with so that you may regain an improved sense of wellbeing.

Following the comprehensive assessment, you and the HUM team will work together to determine a schedule for individual counselling, which may include weekly, biweekly, monthly, or quarterly appointments depending on your needs. Individual counselling at HUM can be short or long-term in nature and can incorporate psychological and personality testing to help further explore an individual’s current challenges and needs.
