Neurofeedback Therapy

What is the goal of the Neurofeedback program?

The goal of neurofeedback (also known as brain wave therapy) is to help re-establish neural equilibrium, diminish unhealthy thought patterns, and help you retrain your mind. In short, it helps you and your brain self-regulate more efficiently and effectively.  When your brain cells (neurons) convey information to one another, they generate electrical impulses called brainwaves. When there is optimal balance of low-frequency brainwave patterns and mid-to-high-frequency patterns and your brain wave patterns are balanced, you’re more likely to feel centered, clear, calm, and in control.  When your brain waves are off balance, the effects will have an impact on your brain and give rise to any number of mood problems, behavioral issues, and functional challenges.

Neurofeedback uses real-time digital technology to measure electrical activity of the brain EEG (electroencephalography) and a mind-based (cognitive) training technique that teaches you how to identify counterproductive brain activity patterns so you can consciously disrupt and replace them with healthier, more balanced brain activity patterns.

Who is the program for?

Anyone can benefit from NFB to balance brain wave patterns and optimize brain function.  Specifically, neurofeedback is beneficial for anxiety, rumination, “busy brain”, difficulty with focus/attention, stress, depression, memory challenges, “foggy brain”, insomnia.

How is the program delivered?

During all neurofeedback sessions, you sit comfortably in a chair with an electrode sensor on your scalp and one on each earlobe. The sensor on your scalp only reads the electrical signals produced by your brain and transmits them to a computer, they don’t transmit any type of signal to your brain.

The first session will be an assessment to determine the appropriate protocol or treatment plan for you based on your brain wave activity.  Following this, you will have 10 treatment sessions (recommended twice a week) where you will watch images on a screen, listen to music, and engage in simple activity.  After the 10th treatment session, you will be re-assessed to evaluate any changes in your brain activity.  It is recommended to have a minimum of 20 sessions to have long term benefits of NFB training.  During the training sessions, your brainwaves will be monitored throughout so the NFB clinicians can program the targeted training parameters (thresholds) using specialized brain mapping software. When you engage in neurofeedback, you get to see a visual representation of the ebb and flow of your brainwave patterns in real time as your brain responds to the images, sounds, or activity you’re presented with.

When can someone start neurofeedback therapy, and are there any prerequisites?

An individual must first complete HUM’s comprehensive assessment to determine readiness for NFB. Some medications and substances influence the results of NFB which will be explored during the comprehensive assessment. Anyone age 18 and older can refer themselves to Neurofeedback at HUM.

What are the costs?

Initial assessment -NFB questionnaire, assessment, interpretation of results for training sessions– $200.00

NFB training sessions-$200

All NFB Therapy is done by a Registered Nurse and Registered Psychologist and can be billed under Psychological Services.  We offer some direct billing to insurance companies.
