Depression Treatment

Everyone occasionally feels sad or blue. These feelings are usually short-lived and pass within a couple of days, and may be directly related to external situations that are troubling you. With Depression, it can interfere with daily life and cause pain for both you and those who care about you. It is often not tied to specific situations or triggers, which makes it even more frustrating for you and your support network. Depression is a common but serious illness, as it may impact sleep and eating patterns, motivation, emotions, and come with thoughts of self-harm or suicide.

Depression, even the most severe cases, can be effectively treated. The earlier that treatment can begin in the course of Depression, the more effective it is.

Symptoms of depression can include:

  • Feeling sad, down, or blue a great deal of the time
  • Thoughts or actions of self-harm or suicidal ideation
  • Loss of pleasure in life and activities
  • Changed sexual, sleeping, and/or eating patterns
  • Loss of motivation
  • Feeling emotionally flat
  • Isolation
  • Feeling like you’re going through the motions

How we treat depression

HUM’s psychotherapeutic approach draws from a variety of models and incorporates aspects of Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Rational Emotive Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, and Family Systems Therapy. Once diagnosed, a person with depression can be treated in several ways. The most common treatments typically include depression counselling with or without medication, depending on the individual. The aim of depression counselling is to allow individuals a safe space to process their emotions and experiences, while learning healthy and effective ways of coping with their symptoms and stressors.
