Marriage and Couples Counselling

Marriage and Couples Counselling

Marriage counselling, also called couples counselling/therapy helps couples (married or not) to understand and resolve conflicts and improve their relationship. Couples counselling gives couples the tools to communicate better, negotiate differences, problem solve and even argue in a healthier way.

At HUM, you have the option for at least one or both individuals to do a comprehensive assessment to determine needs, diagnosis/es and where they are at, or start with couples counselling with one of our providers and go from there. Marriage counselling is often short term. You may need only a few sessions to help you weather a crisis. Or you may need marriage counselling for several months, particularly if your relationship has greatly deteriorated. As with individual counselling, the schedule of your appointments will be determined based on your needs.

You may need marriage/couples counseling if you have experienced any of the following

  • Infidelity
  • Marriage or relationship break down
  • Hazardous or Harmful substance use
  • Addiction
  • Physical or mental health conditions
  • Same-sex relationship issues
  • Cultural clashes
  • Finances
  • Unemployment
  • Blended families
  • Communication problems
  • Sexual difficulties
  • Conflicts about child rearing
  • Infertility
  • Anger
  • Changing roles, such as retirement

How we treat couples needing counselling

At HUM, we provide marriage and couples psychotherapy which draws from a variety of models and incorporates aspects of Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Rational Emotive Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, and Family Systems Therapy.

There are two ways to access marriage/couples services at HUM:

  1. One or both people in the relationship complete the comprehensive assessment and have access to the HUM team and services. This is essential as each individual’s own issues interfere with a happy, healthy relationship and it is critical for individuals to address their own issues rather than avoiding them while trying to fix interpersonal issues.
  2. Book a 1 hour marriage/couples psychotherapy sessions with one of the HUM therapists where we can clarify what may be individual issues that need to be addressed individually; and how the joint issues can be worked on as one understands oneself and each other better.

Available Services For Couples and Marriage Counselling

The assessment includes 3 appointments and is designed to get to know you, the acuity of your issues and appropriate treatment recommendations. The 3 appointments include a nursing assessment, an assessment with a registered psychologist or social worker and a session with a medical doctor. Following this, treatment options will be provided that are based on your needs and current situation. Social and peer support in the community may be recommended as well as other aspects of a bio-psycho-social-spiritual framework of recovery.
