Dr. Raju Hajela
MD, MPH, CCFP (AM), FCFP, President, Medical Director
Raju is a co-founder and principal of Health Upwardly Mobile Inc. (HUM). He received his MD from Dalhousie University (Halifax) in 1982 and his Master of Public Health (MPH) from the Harvard School of Public Health in 1988. He has practised Transcendental Meditation (TM) since 1986 and completed his training in Maharishi Ayurveda in 1994. He has held leadership positions in provincial, national and international medical organizations over his career.
He has developed and delivered many training programs for health care professionals. He has an extensive publication record, with many invited conference plenary presentations and workshops to his credit. He has received numerous honours and awards for his leadership and community work. He has held faculty appointments at medical schools - Queen’s University (Kingston, Ontario) and University of Calgary. He has often provided presentations for corporations, government and the general public.
- He has been the lead developer of the Canadian Certification in Addiction Medicine (CCSAM) established in 2000; and the internationally recognized definition of Addiction established in 2011 through the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM).
- He is a founding (1989) and honourary life member of the Canadian Society of Addiction Medicine (CSAM); and a founding (1999) and life member of the International Society of Addiction Medicine (ISAM)
- He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Addiction Medicine (DABAM)
- He is a certificant with added qualifications in Addiction Medicine (CCFP-AM) and a fellow of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (FCFP)
- He is a Distinguished Fellow of ASAM (DFISAM) and ISAM (DFISAM)
- He is a member of Rotary International and the North American Leader/Board Member for the Rotary Action Group – Addiction Prevention (RAG-AP)
- He is the founding (2013) Medical Advisor to the Foundation of Addiction and Mental Health (FAMH)
